Hotel Eden Rome review - Tatler

Enter the Hotel Eden, the Dorchester Collection’s historic gem at the city’s core – your luxurious five-star home from home. Amid Ludovisi quarter’s storied streets, a mere stroll from the Spanish steps, the rooftop restaurant dazzles with Vatican and Colosseum views (plus a Michelin star). And art enthusiasts rejoice: for the hotel even provides private Caravaggio tours starting at its doors, retracing the footsteps of Rome’s famed artist.

But history spans its corridors too. Its opening in 1889 marked the very first hotel in Rome to include a lift, heating and running water – supreme luxury for the industrial age. And over the years it has attracted guests including Princess Olga of Russia, Hollywood star Ingrid Bergman, English writer Ernest Hemingway, and Italian filmmaker Federico Fellini, among others. In the early 20th century, Sigmund Freud was a regular guest during frequent visits to the city.

Today, the great and good flock to its halls to explore the city. In the morning, weary travellers descend to its intimate spa for bespoke massages and facials, before heading to the Pantheon and Giovanni Bellini’s Trevi Fountain. And by the evening, glamorously dressed Americans enjoy pre-dinner martinis in the marble lobby. After all, these transatlantic visitors come to Rome for one thing: ‘the pasta, of course!’ They coo.

With 98 rooms and suites (compared with 250 at its London equivalent) there is a distinct privateness about the Hotel Eden. It is grand, but shimmers with understated elegance, think delicate wall hangings and a sophisticated collection of artwork. Here, less is more and chicness rules (lest we forget it is Italian). Five star luxury touches all, from the plush bedding to complimentary champagne. And impeccable service is a given.

So where better to nestle after a tour of Rome’s treasured sights? As city break havens go, this is surly king.
