Al Michaels is drawing criticism over his bizarre touchdown call on Jaguars wideout Christian Kirk against the Saints during “Thursday Night Football” on Prime Video.
The legendary sportscaster, 78, seemed to be the only one who didn’t know Kirk scored the game-winning touchdown in Jacksonville’s 31-24 victory at Caesars Superdome.
Michaels sounded confused on the call, saying at one point that “Kirk thinks he scored the touchdown” — although it was evident the wide receiver did not step out of bounds during his 44-yard reception.
“Christian Kirk, inside the 20, and he goes … and Christian Kirk takes the ball all the way… to about the 1-yard line,” Michaels said while pausing in between words.
Meanwhile, Kirk was already celebrating the touchdown with his teammates.
“They’re gonna spot it as [Kirk] thinks he scored the touchdown,” Michaels continued. “And they’re gonna to call it a touchdown now.”
Analyst Kirk Herbstreit, who occupies the booth with Michaels, didn’t interject during the call.
NFL Twitter wasn’t pleased with Michaels, who is in his second season calling “TNF” games for Prime Video.
“Time to retire, Al Michaels,” X user @BigLagowski wrote, including a clip of the call.
Another fan added: “I am a huge Al Michaels fan, however, the last year or so he has not been near as good. This is an awful call to end the game. Sounds like it’s 1st down in the 1st quarter.”
One critic said it was time for Michaels to “go to bed” because things were “getting ridiculous” on the call, while another questioned: “How did Al Michaels see anything other than a touchdown there?”
That was a valid question for many after Kirk gave Jacksonville the 31-24 lead with 3:08 left in the fourth quarter.
The 26-year-old wideout caught a pass from Trevor Lawrence over the middle and took it to the house to help improve the AFC South-leading Jaguars to 5-2.
