I’m not kidding when I say that 2020 is Blackpink's year. Even after the pre-release of How You Like That took the world by storm, and the collaboration Ice Cream with Selena Gomez broke records, Blackpink still isn't satisfied. They've given us yet another masterpiece that could very well be some of their best work. Here are a few thoughts we had while watching Blackpink's brand new music video for Lovesick Girls.
Great aesthetics
The MV is such eye candy and is so aesthetically pleasing. The main set, a dark parking lot, looks gorgeous with the lightning and the girls wearing colour-coordinating clothes. Another really nice touch is the girls in a car together surrounded by beautiful nature scenes at the end. It's possible the parking lot symbolises the dark state the girls were in after the breakup, but the beautiful pastel-themed ending represents them walking out of sadness.
Jisoo is the visual queen
Did I mention how ethereal and godly Jisoo looks in this MV? The visual queen finally got the screen time she deserved. The first pre-chorus, when she is surrounded by flowers, is simply regal and her hairstyle fits her so well. Plus, the colours of the flowers compliment her beauty perfectly. We could just stare at that scene forever.
The return of singing Lisa
Seriously, just how talented can this girl be? In this song, Lisa blessed us once again with her smooth yet strong voice. Even though she just sang a few lines, you can feel the sadness and power radiating from her words. Lisa can rap, sing AND dance. Some people get all the luck.
Rapping Jennie
Despite being the main rapper, Jennie has been gifting us with her singing voice more ever since As If It’s Your Last. While her vocals are awesome, BLINKS still missed the fierce rapper Jennie. In this song, she gives us a savage, heartfelt, powerful rap.
A heavenly chorus
If there’s one thing that represents Blackpink songs, it's a dope beat drop chorus with a cool catch phrase. This has been the case for the majority of their title tracks. Although we can hardly complain, BLINKS do miss the singing choruses but thankfully, our wish was granted on this release. Blackpink gives us a full singing chorus that features them harmonising together.
Give Rose and Jisoo an Oscar
In addition to being aesthetically beautiful, the MV also shows us just how talented the girls are. The image of Rose crying alone in a bathtub and Jisoo damped in a pool hit you hard, and their sad expressions and eyes really represent the pain of a break up and touch your heart.
Lyricists Jisoo and Jennie
BLINKS were thrilled when the album song list was released and we saw Jisoo and Jennie listed as participating in the song-writing process, and they proved to us once again that they’re lyrical powerhouses. The words are poetic and sad and convey the song’s message really well. Lines like ‘Long for love even though it hurts every time’, and ‘You’re all I need even if it hurts’ immediately bring tears to my eyes.
