If you want to take a shot at Friday’s massive $1 billion Mega Millions jackpot but don’t feel like heading out to your local supermarket, convenience store or liquor store to buy some lottery tickets, there are still ways to play the multi-state lottery jackpot online.
In nine states and Washington, D.C., residents can use an app called Jackpocket to purchase tickets from retailers for you. Those states currently include Arkansas, Colorado, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon and Texas.
Residents of Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, North Carolina or North Dakota can buy tickets from their phone or laptop if they register with the lotteries of those states.
Residents of New Hampshire, New York and Virginia can also purchase subscriptions for Mega Millions online. Powerball tickets are also available online in several states.
The third-party Jackpocket app is a relative newcomer and serves as a courier service for purchases.
More than $1 million in tickets have been purchased this week through the app. Jackpocket has more than 1 million registered users.
Since December 2019, lottery players in New Jersey have been able to use a third-party phone app — Jackpocket to purchase tickets.
As with purchasing tickets in person, lottery players can opt for random numbers or select their own.
Jackpocket will buy the tickets from a licensed lottery retailer and send the player a ticket serial number as confirmation, as well as a scan of the front and back of the actual paper ticket. As the state’s first regulated lottery courier, Jackpocket says the tickets themselves are stored safety in a secure vault.
Jackpocket sales in New Jersey have nearly doubled in the past week, a spokeswoman said. Weekly sales since the beginning of December have quadrupled, the spokeswoman added without providing exact figures.
If you win up to $600, Jackpocket will pay you directly. But for bigger prizes, the company will deliver the winning ticket to be redeemed personally by the player. Under state law, the company can charge a transaction fee but cannot keep any portion of the winnings.
If co-workers or friends want to get in on the action, they can create a private, invitation-only Mega Millions or Powerball pool on the Jackpocket app.
Poweball, Cash4Life and Pick 6 tickets can also be bought through the Jackpocket app. Jackpocket is a registered courier service and its license in New Jersey runs through November 2021.
Earlier this month, a New Jersey resident won $1 million with a Cash4Life ticket bought in the app, the biggest prize among the $6 million captured by app users in the Garden State.
The lucky ticket was physically bought at Utopia Deli & Catering on Warwick Turnpike in the Hewitt section of West Milford, New Jersey Lottery officials said.
Thirty-six Mega Millions drawing have been held since a Wisconsin man won the $120 million jackpot on Sept. 15.
