The stars of Marvel Studios' Moon Knight have weighed in with their first reactions to the series' first official trailer.
Actors Oscar Isaac and Ethan Hawke watched the footage's opening moments, exchanging jokes over details like Isaac's fake cockney accent, co-star Lucy Thackeray's comedic timing and the remixed version of Kid Cudi's "Day 'n' Night." They also pointed out the series' creepy tone, the placement of Egyptian paraphernalia and Moon Knight's intense appearance in his on-screen debut.
Moon Knight follows Isaac as Steven Grant, a "mild-mannered gift-shop employee" who suffers from blackouts and memories of a different life. Marvel Studios' official plot synopsis for the series reveals that Steven's struggles will lead him to discover that he has dissociative identity disorder and was once a mercenary named Marc Spector. This revelation begins a chain of events that rocks Steven/Marc's life as he embarks on a globetrotting mystery that ties him to Egypt.
The superhero will come face to face with Hawke's Arthur Harrow. In the comics, Dr. Harrow was a brilliant scientist who conducted unethical experiments on humans to further his understanding of pain. Moon Knight seems to be expanding on this role by turning Harrow into a cult-like figure. The series' first trailer showed people worshiping Harrow and bowing down as he spoke. Hawke claimed in the past that he based his performance on real-life cult leader David Koresh, who used Biblical teachings to garner followers in the early '90s.
While Hawke's Harrow clashes with Isaac in Moon Knight's trailer, the hero's greatest obstacle might be a ghost from his past. Also visible in the series' footage is what appears to be a vision of Khonshu, an ancient Egyptian God. Though Khonshu once saved Moon Knight's life in the comics, he has also been a dangerous and uncontrollable presence in the hero's everyday life.
In addition to the many elements drawn from the Moon Knight comics, some eagle-eyed fans may have spotted at least one Easter egg teasing greater areas of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including the name of one of Marvel Comics' greatest and most iconic supervillains, often linked to the superhero team, the Fantastic Four.
Moon Knight is scheduled to premiere on Disney+ on March 30.
