What happens when Barbie is forced to step out of her tip-top, cookie-cutter, sugar, spice & everything-nice world? That’s the story of Greta Garwig’s fantasy comedy-drama ‘Barbie’. The film is inspired by the world of Barbie, the iconic doll launched by Mattel in 1959. The trailer of the much-anticipated movie finally dropped on social media and the Internet is (rightfully) going berserk over it!
The trailer gives us a sneak peek into Barbie’s beautiful (and slightly phony) pink-coded universe where everyone is miraculously named Ken and Barbie. However, Barbie’s world goes topsy-turvy when she develops an existential crisis. Suddenly she begins to ponder about life and death. More ‘bizarre’ things happen to her - she is unable to float on rooftops and she develops flat feet!
Desperate to get back to normal, she and Ken go on a soul-searching journey to the real world. The pair soon land in trouble when Barbie punches a man who harasses her on the beach. The duo ends up getting arrested.
The film is being frontlined by Hollywood A-listers Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie. The rest of the cast includes illustrious names such as Simu Liu, Dua Lipa, Michael Cera, Connor Swindells, Nicola Coughlan, Emerald Fennell, Kate McKinnon, etc.
As soon as the trailer dropped, netizens went gaga over the trailer and gushed over the pink-drenched aesthetic, funny punchlines, and intriguing plot. "I can't wait to see all the costumes in the Barbie movie, because I am already obsessed with the looks in the trailer,” wrote a Twitter user. Another felt nostalgic. “Taking me back to my childhood and how. Who knew I needed Barbie back in my thirties!"
The soundtrack of the movie also seems promising. It features songs by Lizzo, Charli XCX Dua Lopa etc. Last, but not the least, it also has a remix of the superhit ‘90s track ‘Barbie Girl’ that features Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice!
The film will hit the theatres on July 21.
