Meg 2's First Trailer Raises Questions About Its Rating - CBR - Comic Book Resources

The trailer for Meg 2: The Trench has finally been released, giving audiences their first glimpses of a movie that had mostly been under wraps. The sequel to the 2018 shark thriller, this film will pit Jason Statham against several other fearsome fish. These prehistoric creatures have much more than a fossil to pick with humanity, and the result is a litany of gruesome deaths previewed in the trailer.

The brutality on display is shocking enough with what's already been shown and raises some questions about the film's rating. Though it's believed to be rated PG-13, the movie already feels like an R-rated terror. The rating will likely have a huge impact on the box office intake, but the carnage speaks for itself. As with a newly released blockbuster from a usually family-friendly franchise, it raises a debate as to which films deserve certain age ratings.

Meg 2's First Trailer Takes a Bloody Bite Out of Several Innocent Humans

The first victim seen in the trailer for Meg 2: The Trench is actually a dinosaur, which goes to show just how huge the species of prehistoric shark was. The bite that takes the dino out is particularly bloody, making it feel like something of a tongue-in-cheek insult. The recent Jurassic World films weren't quite as gory, so having a shark do the opposite immediately sets the tone for The Meg sequel.

It's the same throughout the trailer, with humans casually being chomped and disposed of in horrifying ways. Things of this nature already happened in the first movie, but it's even more violent this time around. Of course, there are also tons of absolutely bonkers moments on display, namely Statham riding a jet ski and wielding a katana against a shark. This makes the deaths seem a little less serious, but all in all, the movie definitely feels like a bloody exploitation flick from back in the day. Given how far those films would go and how Meg 2 is looking to do the same, the biggest point of interest has become the movie's rating.

In 2021, director Ben Wheatley was coy on whether Meg 2: The Trench would be rated PG-13 like its predecessor or rated R. Doing the latter would be especially problematic given how it could impact the film's box office success. The Meg made over $152 million in China alone, with this sum making up a substantial amount of its over $520 million total. Similar success won't be had in China if the movie is R rated, with the country typically banning such films. If it ends up going as big as the trailer suggests, Meg 2 will need all the financial help it can get, especially with China opening back up as a viable movie market. Since the movie is now confirmed for a Chinese release, it's essentially guaranteed to be PG-13.

Still, the levels of gore already shown are pretty notable, especially for a supposedly PG-13-level film. The same can be said for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which shocked many with its graphic animal torture. Such movies being merely PG-13 is astounding to some, especially since giving them this rating will attract family-oriented audiences. Pushing the envelope with these movies might be controversial, but it's ultimately a smart move. This way, studios can gain as much profit as possible with movies everyone can watch while still offering the brutal levels of gore that some moviegoers are craving. If Meg 2 can meet this middle ground, it should take an even bigger bite out of the box office than its predecessor.

Meg 2: The Trench will release in theaters Aug. 4.
