Whitney Biennial announces artist list for 2024 edition. - Artsy

The Whitney Biennial 2024, co-curated by Meg Onli and Chrissie Iles, has announced its artist list. Under the theme “Even Better Than the Real,” the biennial will showcase a diverse roster of 69 artists and two collectives. This year’s biennial, as always, is poised to delve into critical discussions about American society and identity amid global tensions.

Notably, the 81st edition features plenty of younger artists, with the youngest—multidisciplinary artist Ser Serpas—born in 1995. In fact, 26 of the 42 visual artists were born after the 1980s, including sculptor Jes Fan and Eddie Rodolfo Aparicio. Also included are plenty more seasoned artists, including conceptual feminist artist Mary Kelly, abstract painter Mary Lovelace O’Neal, and “anti-canvas” artist and gallerist Suzanne Jackson, as well as provocative conceptual artist Pippa Garner.

This roster also includes several Indigenous artists, including the up-and-coming sculptor Rose B. Simpson (who recently had her own solo show at the Whitney) and New Mexico–based artist Cannupa Hanska Luger.

The biennial’s film and performance program, which will include 29 artists, also includes a strong number of Indigenous participants, and is curated by asinnajaq, Korakrit Arunanondchai, Zakary Drucker, and Greg de Cuir, Jr., with Taja Cheek (L’Rain) aiding the performance segment. While the biennial’s roster leans towards New York and Los Angeles–based artists, 16 of the 24 filmmakers live and work outside of the United States.
