Jung Kook Has Been Named The Biggest K-Pop Musician In America - Forbes

K-pop is bigger than ever in America. Every year, more and more acts chart in the U.S., while some favorites rise higher than ever. History is made seemingly every week by at least one superstar from South Korea, as interest in the soloists and groups from the Asian nation isn’t dying down.

To capitalize on this trend, and to celebrate the upcoming relaunch of the Korean edition of Billboard, the music magazine has ranked the 100 most successful musicians in the K-pop world in the United States. The ranking, arranged by Jeff Benjamin (also a Forbes contributor), takes into account the artist’s performance on two of the company’s most important charts in the U.S., the Hot 100 (for songs) and the Billboard 200 (for albums). Touring data was also included to demonstrate all-round popularity and success.

While picking someone to land at No. 1 must be tough for most years, that wasn’t the case in 2023. The inaugural Billboard K-Pop Artist 100 list puts Jung Kook in first place. He made for an easy choice, as he was far and away the most successful South Korean musician in the U.S. last year.

Between January and December 2023–the timeframe considered for the list–no South Korean artist performed better on the Billboard charts in America than Jung Kook. The BTS star debuted his first solo album, Golden, in the runner-up rung on the Billboard 200. He was one of several members of the boy band to stall in the runner-up rung, and he’s now tied for the highest-rising collection ever by a soloist from the Asian nation.

Golden may not have hit No. 1, but it has lived on the Billboard 200 for longer than any other release by a South Korean soloist. The title has now spent 16 frames somewhere on the tally, and it's gaining ground. This week, it surges from No. 137 to No. 75 as Americans continue to buy and stream the set.

Jung Kook also had a massive 2023 on the Hot 100. He collected his first solo No. 1 with “Seven,” which featured rapper Latto. That tune debuted in first place, becoming an instant champion. At the time, he stood out as only the second soloist from South Korea to rule the Hot 100, following behind his BTS bandmate Jimin by only a few weeks.

After “Seven,” Jung Kook scored two more top 10 hits. Both “3D” with Jack Harlow and “Standing Next to You” peaked at No. 5. Those wins made him the K-pop solo star with the most placement inside the highest tier on the competitive tally. He also returned to the ranking alongside The Kid Laroi and Central Cee on the single “Too Much,” which barely missed out on the top 40 before the year was done.

It should be mentioned that while he is known primarily for his K-pop music, much of what Jung Kook released in 2023 shouldn’t necessarily bear that label. He performed in English for his debut album, and that’s partly what helped his songs succeed in the country. While he may not have performed in Korean, he is still a South Korean musician, and he’s largely recognized for his contributions to that style, so he seems a fit for this ranking.
