The Rock’s Comeback Has Almost 300,000 Dislikes Amid Cody Rhodes Drama - Forbes

The Rock came back on SmackDown (again) Friday night, and fans are furious.

Sure, many fans in Birmingham, AL chanted his name, and were excited to see an unannounced appearance by The Rock. But as the dust settles and this storyline marinates, it’s leaving a very bad taste in a lot of people’s mouths.

WWE posted Rock’s latest return on YouTube, and it’s a good thing YouTube disabled the dislike button, because fans are making full use of the toxic tool. The Rock is threatening to steal Cody Rhodes’ WrestleMania spot, and the comment section isn’t holding back.

“Felt so out of character when Cody left the ring. You win the rumble, almost beat Roman last year, wants the title for his father.. but gives it up to The Rock? Sad,” said one user to the tune of 23,000 likes.

“71,000 likes, and 267,000 dislikes. If that doesn't tell you how the people feel about this bs [sic], then I don't know what else will,” read one comment. As of this writing, the dislikes have swelled to 281,000.

“Cody couldn't say he's more CM Punk without having the full Dwayne experience,” read one comment.

“What was all that about, “Cody needs adversity?” What adversity has the Rock faced in the two years Cody’s been back? Hollywood championship indeed,” one user astutely pointed out.

“The Rock taking advantage of his creative position to be the main event, sounds like Hulk Hogan.” Finally, one user wrote “Vince may have been gone, but his spirit lives on.”

Terms like “Poor Cody,” “WE WANT CODY” and #JusticeForCody are trending on Twitter. As I mentioned in a previous video, The Rock inserting himself in a WrestleMania main event as a Board Member is a bad look, and is certain to turn him heel.

After years of Cody Rhodes vowing to finish his story, and fans with him every step of the way, Cody Rhodes willingly rented out his book to The Rock. Like a bleached-blonde book club. Whether WWE knows it or not, the expiration date for Cody to finish his story is WrestleMania 40. Not a second after. Now is not the time for Rhodes to get writer’s block because a 51-year-old TKO executive wants to headline WrestleMania.

That’s just bad storytelling.

Many are comparing Rhodes’ situation to the Daniel Bryan story. While there are similarities, this is worse. Much worse. In 2014, WWE didn’t have Daniel Bryan figured into its WrestleMania plans at all. Bryan wasn’t even included in the 2014 Royal Rumble, so the “Yes Movement” became an organic groundswell of support for Bryan, which ultimately became undeniable. In Rhodes’ case, WWE has trained its fans to believe that Cody is finishing his story. Even after Rhodes shockingly failed to defeat Reigns at WrestleMania 39, fans remained in support of the American Nightmare, knowing he’d finish his story at WrestleMania 40.

With WWE now balking at the finish line, it is in danger of ruining one of its best modern-day storylines. The fallout could be disastrous, with fans likely to turn on Rhodes—not to mention Philadelphia turning on the WrestleMania 40 main event between Dwayne “Batista” Johnson and Roman Orton.

A since-debunked rumor suggested WWE could be planning to unify the belts at SummerSlam, with presumed WWE world heavyweight champion Rhodes competing against whomever the WWE Undisputed Universal champion is coming out of WrestleMania.

This is a terrible idea.

Through Reigns’ scathing promo on SmackDown, WWE already defined the WWE World Heavyweight Championship as a second-place world title. Everybody knows it. When Rollins was begging Rhodes to challenge him for the WWE World Championship on Raw, fans chanted “no!” As evidenced by CM Punk and Rollins himself, injuries can happen between now and SummerSlam. Most importantly, by then the bloom may be off the rose for Cody Rhodes’ story.

Adblock test (Why?)
