Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Drops First Trailer | CBR - CBR - Comic Book Resources

Fans of Sonic the Hedgehog eager to see The Blue Blur dash back onto the big screen are in luck as the film's first official trailer teased a bigger, more explosive film.

The high-energy trailer debuted as a part of The Game Awards 2021 and features the iconic video game characters fans have grown to love. As Sonic becomes more familiar with his place on Earth, the return of Dr. Robotnik forces him to reconsider his role as the protector of Earth. The trailer includes fans' first look at Idris Elba's Knuckles the Echidna and one of the Chaos Emeralds.

In terms of the granular details surrounding Sonic the Hedgehog 2, little is currently known about the film's plot. The brief synopsis released by Paramount Productions already confirmed that Knuckles the Echidna (voiced by Edris Elba) will serve as Doctor Robotnik's sidekick as the two villains hunt for a magical emerald that has "the power to both build and destroy civilizations." Sonic and his best friend Tails the Fox must team up to capture the mystical artifact first, otherwise untold horrors could be unleashed upon the world.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will see several stars from the original film reprising their roles. Ben Schwartz returns as Sonic while Jim Carrey dons his Doctor Robotnik goggles and mustache once again while James Marsden steps back into the average-joe shoes of Tom. Fans of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise will undoubtedly be pleased to hear that Colleen O'Shaughnessey will play Tails. The accomplished voice actor has played the two-tailed fox since 2014, debuting in 2014's Sonic Boom.

As for Knuckles, the announcement that Edris Elba will lend his gritty vocal talents to the character sent waves around the internet. When asked how he plans on bringing the character to life, Elba responded, "Honestly, I cannot say. Contractually, I cannot say anything. But I wouldn't say he was sexy. I don't think I'm going for that. That's for sure."

When the first live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie was announced, the reception of the character's design was poorly received by fans. Many lamented the strangely realistic look given to Sonic who sported human-like limbs and eyes. Feedback was so negative that Paramount Pictures went back to the drawing board and delivered a look inspired directly by the video games. The film debuted to positive reviews with critics enjoying its bouncy energy and compelling performance from Carrey.

Written by Pat Casey and Josh Miller, and directed by Jeff Fowler, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will hit theaters on April 8, 2022.
