MANISTEE – Consumers Energy is matching gift cards in the Manistee-area to help support local businesses this holiday season.
As part of its Our Town effort, Consumers Energy aims to help community members stretch their dollars while also supporting small businesses and their employees with a dollar-for-dollar match for gift cards purchased through local chambers of commerce and downtown organizations.
That means the Our Town gift card promotion will double the amount shoppers can spend locally, according to Kristina Bajtka, Manistee Area Chamber of Commerce director of communications.
The Manistee Area Chamber of Commerce is one of 63 participating community organizations in the state.
Anyone interested in the program can go to ManisteeChamber.com to purchase up to $100 of Manistee County Cash.
The cash program was started in Oct. 2020, as a way to keep dollars local and spent at small businesses instead of at large box stores, according to a press release from the chamber.
There are 37 local merchants currently participating in the program.
The program allows people to buy a community gift certificate from the chamber that can then be used at the participating businesses. The businesses can scan the quick response code on the certificate or use its six-digit code to apply it to a purchase.
The certificates are sold in $5, $10, $15, $20 and $25 options on the chamber’s website. Certificates are sent via email and you can print or pull them up on your mobile device when redeeming.
The initial purchase and match will come in two separate emails through an automated system.
The promotion is capped at a maximum match amount of $100 per person until the funds run out.
“In the first year, Manistee County Cash kept over $63,000 in the community,” Bajtka said in a press release. “Funds will run out quickly and they are … first come first serve."
Consumers is providing $5,000 to $40,000 per community, totaling $750,000.
“Our Town made an impact across Michigan last year, and we look forward to seeing the program’s dollars and shoppers give a boost to shops and restaurants in their hometowns,” said Lauren Youngdahl Snyder, Consumers Energy’s vice president of customer experience in a release.
Manistee County Cash is open to any merchant business in the county who would like to participate. Any merchant businesses wishing to get involved or are interested in learning more about the Manistee County Cash Program, are encouraged to contact the Manistee Area Chamber of Commerce.
