HYBE's girl groups LE SSERAFIM and ILLIT have been both embroiled in controversy over their singing and performance skills.
On April 13, LE SSERAFIM performed at one of America's biggest music festivals, the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. For their Coachella performance, LE SSERAFIM debuted an unreleased song "1-800-hot-n-fun" and collaborated on a special rendition of their title track "UNFORGIVEN" with renowned American musician Nile Rodgers. However, despite their preparation and determination, their vocal performance was perceived as lacking.
Additionally, HYBE's latest girl group, ILLIT, has also come under scrutiny for their performance skills.
Despite being a rookie girl group that debuted just a month ago, they have garnered significant attention on both domestic and international charts, positioning themselves as one of the leaders of the 5th generation of K-pop girl groups.
On April 13, they also secured first place on the MBC 'Show! Music Core' with the title track "Magnetic" from their mini 1st album 'SUPER REAL ME.'
However, the issue arose during the encore stage after winning first place. The live performance of the five members on the encore stage was different from their previous music show performances. Popular members like Wonhee and Moka displayed unstable pitch, giving an uneasy appearance on the encore stage.
This performance was widely shared across various online communities, and while fans expressed their support for the rookie girl group, they also revealed their disappointment in their live performance skills.
Korean netizens commented, "This is sad, I guess it's true that HYBE only looks at their face and not their skills," "Does HYBE not give vocal training?" "Wow they're so bad," "These two teams lack a lot of skill... Did HYBE decide to ruin K-pop?" "But they're good at marketing," "Do they not practice?" "I don't think they are not singers," "I think ILLIT members are all ok except Moka..." "But NewJeans members can all sing and dance well," "If they can't sing they should at least hide their skills," and "This is making HYBE look bad."
