Joko Anwar horror flick 'Siksa Kubur' attracts 1.4 million moviegoers - Entertainment - The Jakarta Post

ore than 1.4 million cinemagoers have watched director Joko Anwar's latest psychological horror film Siksa Kubur (Grave Torture), the filmmaker said on Monday.

"Thank you. 1,401,717 people have watched the snake going by without asking permission up until the afternoon of its fifth day [of release]," Joko posted on his Instagram page on Monday.

The snake Joko referred to is part of a pivotal scene in the movie where the reptile makes an appearance shortly after the movie’s protagonist Sita begins to bury herself in order to prove the existence of the afterlife and eternal damnation.

The much-anticipated Siksa Kubur is Joko's second horror film in recent years, following 2017's Pengabdi Setan (Satan's Slave), a box office hit that became the biggest film of the year.

Siksa Kubur is a development of a short film Joko shot in 2012.

Siksa Kubur was the second film last week to score an audience of more than 1 million this Idul Fitri holiday season.

Also on Monday, Indonesia's first horror film shot for the IMAX format, Badarawuhi Di Desa Penari (Badarawuhi in the Village of Dancers), recorded 1.6 million viewers.

Badarawuhi was directed by action director Kimo Stamboel.
