Maidaan box office collection day 1: Ajay Devgn delivers his weakest opening since Runway 34 as sports drama hopes to capitalise on positive buzz - The Indian Express

Maidaan’s box office collections on day one weren’t as impressive as Ajay Devgn would’ve hoped. Despite being released on the prime Eid holiday and having earned glowing reviews, Maidaan struggled to find takers on opening day. Maidaan opened for select paid previews on Wednesday, where it collected Rs 2.6 cr, followed by a full-fledged release on April 11, Eid, where the film collected merely Rs 4.50 cr, according to estimates posted by Sacnilk. The total for day one stands at Rs 7.10 cr.

This a worryingly low opening for an Ajay Devgn holiday release, but aligns with the pre-release buzz, which remained muted despite glowing reviews across the board. There appeared to be limited interest among the audience to watch the film, as the occupancy throughout the day remained below 16 percent.

The opening day figure of Maidaan, including paid previews, is almost 50 percent less than that of Ajay’s last few releases. While his supernatural thriller Shaitaan, which was released last month, opened top Rs 14.75, his Drishyam 2 had clocked in Rs 15.38 cr on day one. Even his actioner Bholaa, which was released in March last year, saw an opening of Rs 11.20 cr. The only other film that opened to worse numbers than Maidaan was his 2022 Eid release Runway 34, which did Rs 3 cr.

The Amit Ravindernath Sharma directorial has now set itself up for a fairytale comeback, with Saturday and Sunday being crucial for the movie. Maidaan has to now hit double digits in the next two days to show an upward trend at the box office, which would give an indication if the audience has accepted the film.

It will also have to battle it out at the box office with the other Eid release, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, starring Akshay Kumar and Tiger hroff. The Ali Abbas Zafar actioner also took a low start despite being released on the big Eid holiday and collected Rs 15.50 cr. Both films now have to hold strong and register solid gains for any chance of a turnaround, especially considering that they weren’t made frugally.

While the budget of Bade Miyan Chote Miyan is reportedly around Rs 350 cr, trade circles have also noted how the landing cost of Maidaan–after years of delay–amounts to Rs 250 cr. The low opening of both the films makes it an uphill task for them to come anywhere close to their reported budget, at least as of now.
