NewJeans' parents, represented by their legal counsel, have made startling claims against HYBE founder Bang Si Hyuk, alleging that he would deliberately ignore greetings from the group's members. These allegations surfaced in a report by Ilgan Sports, which obtained an email sent from ADOR on behalf of the parents to HYBE, outlining their concerns and grievances regarding the debut of ILLIT, another group under the HYBE umbrella.
The email, drafted jointly by the parents and legal representatives of the NewJeans members, raised several issues, including similarities between ILLIT's concept and that of NewJeans, spanning photography, styling, choreography, and music video aesthetics. The parents expressed dismay over what they perceived as HYBE's deliberate attempt to replicate NewJeans' success with their new girl group, ILLIT, just 20 months after NewJeans' debut.
Moreover, the parents questioned the intentions of Belift Lab, a subsidiary of HYBE, accusing the company of insufficiently vetting their content and even mocking NewJeans. They voiced their concern, stating, “Is there no intention to protect NewJeans and each member’s brand value within HYBE? The reason why these issues are not groundless is because there have been too many ridiculous situations”, as quoted by Koreaboo.
The most shocking revelation from the parents' statement was the claim that Bang Si Hyuk would allegedly ignore greetings from NewJeans members when encountered in the company building. The parents recounted, “Whenever the NewJeans members encountered Bang Si Hyuk in the company building, we wondered why Bang Si Hyuk would pretend not to recognize the members and turn a blind eye to their greetings. At first, we didn’t believe our children, thinking, ‘Oh, he probably just didn’t recognize you then,’ so we attempted to verify this”.
Despite initial disbelief, the parents asserted that this behavior occurred repeatedly, leaving them no choice but to conclude that Bang Si Hyuk was deliberately snubbing the NewJeans members. “However, since this issue has happened several times, with different dates and locations, even when it was just Bang Si Hyuk and the members, we believe there is no other possibility except recognizing that they are, in fact, NewJeans”, they shared further adding, “Even if you don’t recognize the NewJeans members, it’s just basic manners to accept someone’s greetings when they say hello first. Is that so difficult?”
They expressed frustration and embarrassment, writing, “As parents, we were embarrassed and had nothing to say about this childish situation after hearing that it wasn’t just once or twice where they were deliberately avoided, but examples such as they were embarrassed that they were being ignored so they just stood in the elevator with blank expressions or noticing that he was pretending to not see them. They are just middle and high schoolers”.
ADOR confirmed to media outlet Joy News24 that emails containing these allegations were indeed sent to HYBE. As the situation unfolds, NewJeans remains active in their promotional activities, recently confirming an appearance on the popular variety show ‘2 Days & 1 Night’. Meanwhile, ADOR plans to convene another meeting on May 31 to address these ongoing concerns.
