Burning Sun Scandal: KBS Slams BBC, Threatens Legal Action Over 'False Claims' In Documentary

KBS is considering to take legal action against BBC News following the release of the Burning Sun documentary. The Korean national broadcasting agency was accused of involvement in Jung Joon-young's illegal filming case in the docu-feature.

KBS plans to take legal action against BBC

On May 21, a day after BBC released a documentary on the Burning Sun Scandal, KBS' legal team released a statement. "The journalist who appeared in the BBC documentary Burning Sun claimed KBS lawyers contacted and pressured Jung Joon-young's victims. These claims are false and unfounded," KBS stated.

KBS clarified that the lawyer who advised Jung Joon-young's victims about possible legal consequences were not employed by the network. "When the victims say they were afraid after a lawyer advised they might face legal consequences if their evidence was insufficient after BBC narrates that KBS' lawyers contacted the victims, we would like to make it clear the lawyers were the victim's representatives," they added.

KBS' lawyers are planning to ask the BBC to correct their mistakes in a press release. However, if they don't comply, the network plans to legal action.

For the unversed, the BBC recently released a damning documentary about the Burning Sun Scandal. In the docu-feature, one of the journalists who played a key role in exposing the scandal shed light on the unethical tactics used by main culprit Jung Joon-young and KBS' lawyers to pressure a victim into retracting her accusations.
